English Victorian Five Old Mine Cut Diamond Ring, c. 1870s–1880s
The distinctive sparkle of old mine cut diamonds is unlike that of their modern counterparts. Cut entirely by hand, these antique diamonds display broad flashes of light and character that continue to captivate collectors today.
This ring is set with five graduated old mine cut diamonds, with the largest diamond positioned at the centre and the remaining stones decreasing in size toward the shoulders. The arrangement creates a balanced and elegant design that has remained popular for generations.
Old mine cut diamonds were fashioned during an era illuminated by candlelight, gaslight, and early electricity. Their larger facets interact beautifully with changing light conditions, producing a soft yet lively brilliance that differs noticeably from modern diamond cuts.
We date this ring to the late Victorian period, circa 1870s–1880s. Of English origin, it bears the maker's mark of W.G.&S. (William Griffith & Sons), a Birmingham jewellery firm established in 1850.
Five-stone diamond rings were considered highly romantic during the Victorian era and were often given to commemorate anniversaries and other important milestones. Today, this versatile ring could be worn as a wedding band, anniversary ring, right-hand ring, or treasured addition to an antique jewellery collection.
The ring is handmade and is currently a size 7.
